A new pocket computer appear in the May 1982 edition : the TRS-80 PC2 !

Page 45 of that article has a great speed comparison. It is a program that prints out the squares and cubes for numbers 1-100. It’s a so-so comparison because it depends so heavily on the text output. I remember my Apple II would run this faster than a Mac because the Mac was so busy drawing the proportional characters on the screen, while the Apple II had hardware to draw simpler characters.
The times were:
PC-1 3:50 (3 minutes, 50 seconds)
PC-2 0:44
Model III: 0:14
For fun, I ran it on my laptop:
0.000u 0.000s 0:00.00 0.0% 0+0k 0+0io 0pf+0w
… too fast!!
Measuring it with more precision, I got 54061 nanoseconds:
i7 from 2011: 0:0.000054
That is about 800,000x faster than the PC2. Or 70 clock cycles of the PC2 – About the time to add 10 bytes.
